Truth Does Not Change— Our Understanding Can
God is constant. His truth is trustworthy. But He has not revealed everything at once, and our understanding is not complete.
A Truth-Seeker's Principle
Truth does not have to change for our understanding of truth to grow.
Begin With What Does Not Change
God is constant.
Malachi 3:6
“For I am the LORD, I change not...”
James 1:17
“...with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
God does not need to correct Himself.
But that does not mean
we
understand everything perfectly.

God remains trustworthy and consistent.

We may learn more, see more clearly, or discover that an interpretation needs correction.

Progressive Revelation
God did not reveal His entire plan all at once. His purposes unfolded across Scripture and history.
Abraham did not possess the New Testament. David did not know everything the apostles would later understand. The prophets sometimes spoke about events whose full significance became clearer later.
God's plan was not changing. More of the plan was being revealed.
Sometimes the Truth Was Already There
John 12:16
“These things understood not his disciples at the first...”

The Scripture did not change.
The event did not change.
Their understanding changed.
Pause & Notice
The truth was already there. Their understanding caught up later.
Understanding Can Be Opened
Luke 24
The disciples knew the Scriptures. They knew what had happened to Jesus. Yet they had not put the pieces together correctly.
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.”

Daniel Heard—but Did Not Fully Understand
Daniel 12:8
“And I heard, but I understood not...”
Daniel received revelation and still had questions about its meaning.
Daniel 12:9
“...the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.”
Daniel was not given every answer he wanted.
Interpretive Humility
Sometimes the responsible answer is: “I don't know yet.”
That is not necessarily a failure of faith. It may be intellectual and spiritual humility.
An Important Distinction
Revealed does not always mean fully understood.
The full significance or fulfillment of some passages may not yet be clear to us.
This is especially important when studying prophecy. We can study carefully without pretending that our present interpretation is certain.
Some Things Belong to God
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us...”

Some Things Are Revealed
We are invited to understand and respond.
Some Things Require Searching
Understanding may deepen through study.
Some Things Remain With God
Not every mystery has been given to us to solve.
When Passages Seem Difficult
Don't panic. Don't force an answer. Investigate.
When two passages seem difficult to reconcile, ask:
Am I reading both in context?
Are they the same genre?
Are they answering the same question?
Am I adding an assumption?
Could translation matter?
Is there a manuscript question?
Am I forcing agreement too quickly?

Are there manuscript or translation questions worth knowing?

How Am I Understanding It?
Could my interpretation be mistaken?
A Question to Remember
Is the Bible contradicting itself— or are my interpretations in tension?
What Should a Truth-Seeker Do?
Hold firmly to God. Hold your interpretations more humbly.
Trust God
God remains trustworthy even when our understanding is incomplete.
Search Diligently
Context, comparison, study, and prayer can deepen understanding.
Remain Teachable
New evidence may require us to refine an interpretation.
Allow Understanding to Grow
Greater context can reveal a fuller picture.
Don't Force an Answer
Uncertainty is sometimes more honest than premature certainty.
Ask God for Wisdom
Truth-seeking is not merely an intellectual exercise.
A Truth-Seeker's Principle
Truth does not change. But our understanding of truth may need to.
We can trust God without assuming that our present interpretation is infallible.
Look Within
What am I actually trusting?
What is the difference between trusting Scripture and trusting my interpretation of Scripture?
Have I ever understood a passage differently after learning more about its context?
Am I comfortable saying “I don't know” when Scripture does not give me enough information to be certain?
If further study challenged one of my interpretations, would I be willing to change it?
A Prayer for Understanding
Help me trust what is true without assuming I understand everything perfectly.
God, give me wisdom to recognize what You have revealed, patience with what I do not yet understand, and humility when my interpretation needs correction.
Keep me from forcing answers simply because uncertainty is uncomfortable.
Help me search carefully, listen closely, and remain teachable.
Open my understanding as I study Your Word, and help me seek truth with both my heart and my mind.

Seek deeply. Think carefully. Pray for wisdom. Remain teachable.
