Multiplier Effect When You Pray in Groups?
Have you ever heard this verse used at a small prayer meeting?
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
That sounds like Jesus is promising to show up whenever even a tiny group of Christians gathers.
But that’s not what the passage is primarily about.
That interpretation can become reading our situation or desires into the text.
Now look at the context.
Matthew 18 is discussing how believers should respond when someone sins: confront them privately, then bring one or two others, and eventually involve the church.
Jesus then speaks about agreement, binding and loosing, and says, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Let’s ask what the verse means in that context.
Jesus is assuring his followers of his presence and authority as they carry out this difficult process together.
Same verse.
Very different reading.
Stop reading superficially. Move past the coffee-mug theology and learn true biblical exegesis.
